Two cathedrals approach each other at opposite ends of Hope Street. Ask for the new cathedral and people don't know which direction to point you in because the one that was started first is the one that was finished last. The Gothic stone Liverpool Cathedral built between 1904 and 1978 is the largest Anglican cathedral in Britain. Its organ has 9,765 pipes now and is expected to have a total of 10,300 pipes by the end of the year. The concrete Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral built in the go between 1962 and 1967 is the most modern-looking cathedral in the country.
