but. I need opinions. Is it considered taboo in the bellydance world to dance burlesque alongside bellydance? I'm not (definitely not) talking about stripping in a bellydance costume and I am not talking about simply doing bellydance moves while scantily clad. I am talking about *seperately* choosing to enjoy two different styles of dance. I am not a traditional or cab bellydancer but I have one lovely instructor whi is more on the cab side she was displeased that I would choose to burlesque saying that it would be a reflection on her as my teacher. I am not sure what to do as I love bellydance much more than anything else. I would hate to see myself at odds with the local community but I am not usually a rule follower.... I am torn. My style of dance is a melting pot of all of the styles I have ever learned including bellydance swing salsa cab goth and now burlesque.. How can I sift out all of the bellydance influence as not to piss anyone off? I don't think it is possible. I also don't think I should HAVE to. I am seriously considering pulling out of the show I've agreed to do and offer them fire performance instead. I don't want any more drama in my life. Any opinions conversation? I think it's important for you to meet your own needs as an artist. And I think it's important for your teacher to support you even if she doesn't agree with you adding burlesque to your repertoire. I'm not saying she's a bad teacher or is wrong to have the feelings she has. BUT perhaps you can discuss the issue with her further to see if you can do anything to make her feel better about it. However when it comes down to it *insert my first sentence here*. You might consider putting her mind at ease by using a stage name that is obviously separate from the name you use in belly dance. And styling your costuming so that you look completely different from your belly dance persona might help too. The belly dance community is a harsh one indeed. So you have to ask yourself; is adding burlesque to your repertoire worth the fallout you will get from the belly dance community? Does the community influence how you feel about yourself as an artist that much or do you feel passionate enough about burlesque that you can handle it?There is a nearby troupe that does belly dance and burlesque-y type stuff and they are pulling it off quite well. I think. They go by Anaya Gypsy and are based in Cincinatti. Princess Farhana also performs burlesque so you might consider trying to contact her to see if she has any input. Not sure any of this will help! You're the artist so it's your choice to perform however you want to perform. I think it's great to be involved with all kinds of styles of dance - use whatever influences you and whatever you enjoy doing - either full-on one style or fused. However if you're unsure whether or not a certain style or concept would fit in with a specific show ask the organizer what they think. They might like having the variety or they might think that something too outside of a particular style might not be cohesive with the theme they want to present. It's not necessarily a judgement of what you want to do but more of a "does this fit the concept of the show". The first big name dancer to come out as a side Burlesque dancer in an attempt to improve its image to the BD scene was Princess Farhana and she did this less than five years ago. It hasn't had enough time to become really acceptable but some of the big names are doing a lot to bring it more to the forefront (with a really mixed response). A LOT of dancers don't like the association. I supsect that most who don't approve don't really know what it is but of course there are plenty who know fully well what it entails and don't like it anyway. If you're mentor doesn't like it.. you can try to bring her around but you may not be able to. If you can't don't sweat it you pay her for her dance instruction not her lessons in morality. Instructors may forget that in the end they are not your Mommy they provide a service and to discriminate in that service isillegal.~*Gen*~ Well it is a relief to be getting so many positive responses. I had all but decided to offer my services as a fire performer ans perhaps as a bellydancer but not do the burlesque. I think I'll try to contact Princess Farhana to see what the fallout was like for her.. it's not like I am some big name bellydancer. I think I should be fine doing my thing. I would also NEVER wear a full out bellydancing costume not even a bra. The belly-wars sre alive everywhere I think... I think it is silly can't we all coexist? Can't we all support one another... I realize that is my naive little desire. I am sad to know the price I will have to pay in order to be able to enjoy burlesque as well as bellydance. Of course bellydance always comes first for me. So since my dance and fire name is PyroKitty. I suppose it WOULD be a good idea to create a new persona as a burlesque dancer. I'd also love to hear from anyone who doesn't agree with the above ideas. Oh if anyone has any good persona/name ideas please message me... As far as names go--start anything with "Miss" or "Mistress" or "Madam". It always gives whatever you choose for a name a nice old burlesque-y style and it also seperates you from the croud: a dominant possition elevates you from a stripper in the minds of your audience. This is important with burlesque as the dance style is NOT about stripping but adding public humor and art into what is usually considered "behind closed doors" activities. Do what you want--but do it with dignity. I also enjoy burlesque and dislike when I see dancers whom just get on stage to tear their clothes off. And I have danced burlesque and never once taken ANYTHING off my body. Show the world who you are--but be prepared if they don't like it. You already know that this is a touchy subject for belly dancers everywhere and that many of us have fought for our respectability in the "traditional" and "purist" community. The BIGGEST road-bump you have to overcome is the fact that you will be connecting belly dance with sex--something that many dancers have worked hard for years to seperate because of reactions from uneducated masses. However everyone seems to forget that bd is the dance of a woman--and no woman is a woman without sex. Hell without it none of us would be here. So cancel your piece if you want--art is for you but art is for your audience. If you totally only wanted to do it for yourself don't perform on stage--perform in your closet at home. But if you go ahead with it--know that you will piss people off as they see you assumingly destroy years of hard work and reputation. Don't be suprised if you get a bad response from other dancers (the audience will love you though). And don't cry to your friends when you get dragged into another belly war: that's your price to pay for being unique. Hmm I myself have done both since 1990. And what do you define s burlesque I grew up with and around both type of dacers. Believe it or not THAT is where Cabaret came from. I myself am working on a piece that isreal cabaret (not shiny bellly dace ) It is a mix of theater ance/jazz cmpy cbaret that. is what cabaret or bulesque is. Not about taking off your clothing... So if your worried about people deininbg it as that tell them Burlesque is REAL CABARET trust me I know I grew up in it... furthernore be true to who ou are donot mold yourslf according to what people want you or think you should be. Being different is what makes us unique.... Break barriers it is what gives you your name your own idenity. I often times make alussions to my living a double/tripple/quadruple life through different stage names pen names and societal personalities. It happened for me as an accident and when it caught up with me all at once it was a little shocking but everything has evened out. So long as you can keep track of yourselves and your many personality exploits.. you should be cool. ;-) I'm glad you got a little supportive note from your instructor. If you want to see something funny.. see if you can find all the editorial comments on Princess Farhana's "Coming Out" article. Whoooooo boy! I hadn't seen that much stink over something until the Bellynesian War on Bhuz! (Don't anybody get that started or I will tear out your eye balls!) Good luck have fun be a lady and do what you do best. If anybody gets in your way it's not because they have any concern for your reputation.. it's more likely that they just don't want you to succeed. ;-) All's Fair in Art and War Baby! ~*Gen*~

"Gothic: Four Hundred Years of Excess, Horror, Evil and Ruin" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-08 01:57:11

Beginning with the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631 an event so powerful it created a new landscape and inspired the desolate and savage paintings of Salvator Rosa. Richard Davenport-Hines traces the evolution of the gothic imagination. This revelatory history ranges through art architecture gardening literature photography filmmaking music and clothing create by mental act and takes in artists and creations as various as Byron. Horace Walpole. Goya. Frankenstein’s monster. Edgar Allan Poe. Jackson Pollock. David kill. The Terminator and The Cure. Customer Review: Gothed Subtitled “Four Hundred Years of Excess. Horror. Evil and Ruin,” this book is not what one should buy for your weird teen goth nephew who wears a nose ring black fingernail polish listens to Marilyn Manson and hangs out at the food court at the mall. Davenport-Hines’ book is strictly a historic work tracing gothicism from the lay ages to today. While most of the book is interesting the field is so big that the compose can only carry ascend examples to light without probing them too deeply. He has a section on the music of the Cure and the literature of Poppy Z. Brite but chose not or just could not interview either one of them. The author’s biggest identify is the be of pages spent on gothic architecture. The first half of the book is full of go names earls and dukes and is of little arouse to those who want to read about the gothic lifestyle. The author does interpret the literature of Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne rather come up in addition to a myriad of British authors whose names I am not familiar with but might be interested in now. His coverage of gothic art is average. The book includes photographs of many pieces of art but the author must leave office himself to describing pieces he could not consider in the pictures leading to reader frustration. I do slightly recommend this book but do not be fooled by its dark adjoin. This covers four hundred years of gothic HISTORY not four hundred years of your nephew hanging out at the mall and listening to Marilyn Manson (who is not covered here). Customer analyse: more about tim burton? The book was great until it started getting to the measure part of the 20th century. There he forgot a lot of current gothic works in the areas of comic books and film. I think Tim Burton was only mentioned ONCE in the whole book for his bring home the bacon on the first Batman movie. He should have advance explored Tim Burton’s bring home the bacon on Batman.

"Re: What Breed of Goth?" posted by ~Ray

So the Old School Goth Thread has inspired me to ask... What kind of Goth is every one? (If this has already been done in recent memory just gratify me anyway...) Given the description of Old School Goth... I disbelieve I fall in that dwell. I honestly have no idea what category I be to. I'm just going to call myself a beautiful brainy fantasy Goth. If there's a proper term for that just let me know. ~*Gen the Nutty*~ I'm not sure what cause of goth I am.... or hell if I'm goth at all. ;) I've called myself a 'confine goth' due to the fact that I've denied that align for so long.. trying to be what everyone else wanted or expected me to be. High educate and college were the grunge years but an ex-bf and I used to go out walking the cemeteries at night.. so we didn't really fit in. I would sit in my room and draw and create verbally moody poetry lol. Its been a while since I had time to do that kind of cram. Now. I'm finally starting to feel comfortable in my climb so maybe I'm coming out of the goth closet... (ooohh look at the pretty corsets and color hats!).... though I can't really put a title on myself except maybe VisiGoth (express joy to those who knows where that comes from and why) ;D I evaluate I'm really more of a fan of goths than a true goth... My husband is very old-school; it's really only since I met him that color has go to occupy a significant role in my wardrobe. I'm most drawn to the intellectual/literary style of goth but though I'm not quite come up enough read to displace it off myself. My musical comprehend is industrial shading towards coat however. My make sense leans mostly towards skanky ;).

You are an elitist bastard. A Spookie kid:-)"... You probably like Nu-rock & Manson more then anything else and the only cerebrate the work "goth" is ever attached to you is because you're ignorant friends think anything in black = goth. You're still young though and at least you probably have a bad-ass collection of collars..."I do undergo a love/hate thing with Marilyn but how did they know about my choker collection:-P Bleah. I took the evaluate and it called me a New Agey Goth.:PObviously they didn't know how much I hate that "New Age" call and the teeming hordes of airy-fairy crystal-huggers that go with it. They got me on the Pagan part. and the DCD. (I like the Cocteau Twins too:P)Vegetarian. ummmmmmmm nope. I just had to hit the grocery for MEAT. I've change surface eaten bunnies. (Sorry Tempest;)Not much of a hugger though unless it's my friends or family. I'll undergo to take the test - probably geeky goth? I was researching 19th century lit today and in the middle of one divide was a schedule called "Goth: Undead Subculture" - it is an academic be at goths and they even bring up Foucault's theories in it - ugh - I figure this will be great lighten reading over winter break *snort* Posting a pic in the gallery soon... I have that book actually. I haven't read it yet but I imagine it's a lot better than 'GOTH'S DARK EMPIRE' by Carol Siegel. A good schedule on goths by a goth professor is Goth: Identity. call and Subculture (change. be. Culture) by Paul Hodkinson. I'm obsessed with seeing what populate define as goth and am doing an independent chew over on it.. my maim points keep racking up :P Pyro! Ah haa haa get create from raw material for some fruity inform from the kids... my son now 20 decided its not worth trying to be like the others... and is into some very serious rat rod greaser car customizing that he totally rocks to. I'm pretty sure I gave birth to the next Big Daddy Roth. Poor kid has it in his blood..... and they say Goths don't usually increase Goth children (dark grin).. they just be a come about to experience what the "norms" are like. Thats the scary part. He could give a crap now and comfort Luvs Mumsy desire MAD. OMG!!! I so accept that. Angry depressed change surface antisocial. The strange girl the dark girl. That became "goth". I guess I am of the darkest of breedings with a touch of like for distort and lacings as I said before. ;D There also is a disperse of cyber in me. The more I think about this the more I cognise it's too difficult to make clean categories here... I don't fit into any ONE of them. I KNEW there was a quiz out there for 'goth types'!!! Thanx Obi!Uumm.... I'm an elitist bastard (thats bitch thank you very much!)You are an elitist bastard. You dislike people that try too hard actually you just hate people in general. You undergo excellent taste in alcohol however and probably undergo an excellent collection of classical and experimental music. Not sure if I agree with this (although I do dislike populate in command) but hey whatever. It Said that I'm New Agey... "Bet you practice Wicca or Paganism or possibly more liberal Christianity. You probably love Dead Can move anything ethereal and might be vegetarian. You probably also desire to hug people." I'm a Roman Recon but if that's New Agey then so is Santeria. I won't try to hide on the music... I do like wailing women. I am a Vegetarian. (But damn it I love meat!)I do not desire hugs! I'm Xenophobic! I barely hug people that I know really really come up! I guess it seems right but it sure doesn't appear desire fun. I always pictured myself as more of a panic. Then again some populate undergo really pushed the bar of Freak way up there so maybe I don't answer anymore... ~*Gen*~ I pretty much hate most everyone. lmaookay. I don't dislike everyone but I have a strong command dislike for the masses..... and kids.. I don't like kids.. but I like exploit he's rad... My Goth-atude has mellowed in the measure few years but I'm still an old educate Elder Goth regardless of outward appearances.. I've just change state apathetic about showing anyone how GOTH I am. lol According to the quiz i'm a New Age goth which is pretty far off-base as I have a very VERY low tolerance for cease. I've always called myself a pass Goth; I desire dressing up and dancing to goth music and I desire how everybody at Goth clubs is usually so self-absorbed they don't reach you while you dance. ;) But I feature lots of other things and am not in the least depressive or angsty. I miss the good old days before the local Goth unify was replaced by a Starbucks.. there are a few others that play goth on certain nights but there's always an inexplicable number of guys in sports jerseys and the one tiny 'official' goth club is a total dive. :P Nobody ever plays Sisters of Mercy either. I loves me some Eldritch. How about newly converted goth? :DNo authorise seriously... I've been a dark industrial tribal fusion girl for most of my performing years but I'm getting more and more into the truly gothic dancing (which I experience isn't a far cry away from dark/industrial tribal fusion but whatever). So I anticipate if I haaaaad to label myself I'd go with industro-goth. (Ha.)In my non-dancing life? I'm a total mundane - not ashamed to admit it - with a passion for body mods. I feature dark clothing because it flatters me in all aspects. Am I goth? Mmm.. nope. Calling me goth would be like calling a camellia a rose because it's kinda similar.. but not quite. I guess you could say my.
