I posted this on the Biz of Bellydance tribe and it was suggested that I post it here and the Tribal BD tribe so it would arrive the wider community. While I want to hear from everyone. I am specifically talking about the SF Bay scene of mostly tribal/tribal fusion/goth dancers. This may end up getting me blackballed from shows but gratify bequeath that I say all of this in full support of my friends and this community and to carry us all up... Recently a number of dancers (including me) were asked if we wanted to perform at an upcoming unify event in SF. The person who asked us is a friend of mine and undergo a lot of love and consider for her.. but she is NOT the promoter of the event just for clarification. She just knows the promoter. There is next to no pay involved and since the show is only a week or so away no real promotion for the dancers. The club where it's being held is huge and a very expensive place to direct an event. They undergo multiple dj's one of which came in from Paris. So it's not desire there wasn't a budget. Now. I LOVE this community and I love performing but I also evaluate that unless it's for a benefit student show or other really good cerebrate (which is different for everyone) we should be paid a decent evaluate. Low pay and undercutting are big problems in the world of bellydance but especially in the tribal fusion scene. I understand that we get asked to do these types of shows all in the spirit of fun and performing for fun but what bothers me is that this promoter (the 1015 person) is assuming that he can get bellydancers for free or dirt cheap when in reality one set even a short set should cost *upwards* of $100 per dancer. We're seen as a cheap afterthought not as a valued part of the event experience. But if I say that I should be making a decent evaluate. I run the risk of being seen as "not doing it for the like of the dance" or "not supporting the community". Both of which are frankly bullshit. I get that events act a lot of money to put on but I can't create by mental act the dj's are doing this for so little and I don't see why we would either. You could argue that the dj goes on for an hour while our sets are generally short but I'm betting a dj doesn't pay and hour or two getting ready for the gig much less the rehearsal time and apparel prep involved. Many dancers don't undergo a day job and what little money promoters furnish is quite enticing.. so they're forced to decide between sticking to their guns or going without groceries that week. But regardless of how we choose to live our lives we are all hungry for a come about to perform so we're stuck between two unpleasant realities: get paid next to nothing or don't perform.
